United in Christ: Saint Mark’s Life-Changing Pilgrimage to Kenya
This summer, a group of 23 parishioners from Saint Mark Church in Boca Raton embarked on a mission pilgrimage that was nothing short of life-transforming. Traveling across the world to Kapsabet, Kenya, they witnessed the consecration of the newly built Saint Mark Orthodox Cathedral, a sacred project born from the love, prayers, and generosity of our parish community.
The cathedral was constructed in partnership with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) and under the spiritual guidance of His Grace Bishop Neofitos. More than a building, it now stands as a vibrant symbol of the unity of the Orthodox Church across continents—reminding us all that Christ’s Church knows no borders.
The pilgrimage was blessed by the presence of His Eminence Metropolitan Sevastianos of Atlanta, whose joyful spirit and deep connection with Archbishop Makarios of Nairobi brought a unique depth to the experience. His Eminence expressed deep pride in the Saint Mark community for its generosity and unwavering commitment to the Gospel.
Dan Christopulos, Development Director of OCMC and a former full-time missionary to Kenya in the 1980s, co-led the pilgrimage and provided invaluable insight into the life and growth of the Orthodox Church in East Africa. His guidance, stories, and love for the Kenyan faithful offered the group a meaningful context for every encounter.
Over the course of the pilgrimage, the group visited key institutions and communities that revealed the heart and soul of Orthodoxy in Africa:
- At the Archbishop Makarios III Seminary in Nairobi, they met dozens of young men preparing for the priesthood with passion and purpose.
- At the OCMC Technical School Dormitory, the team saw firsthand how the Church is building sustainability and self-reliance through education and local support.
- In the village of Cheptulu, over 600 children welcomed the mission team with singing, dancing, and uncontainable joy. The group served lunch, delivered school supplies, and gifted a guitar—moving many to tears as they learned they would now have music for worship.
- At Makarios Boys High School, high in the Kenyan mountains, the team shared stories, sang together, and broke bread with students whose faith and perseverance left a lasting impression.
- The journey culminated in Kapsabet, at the consecration of the Saint Mark Cathedral. Joined by hundreds of faithful, the group stood in prayer, offering incense and chanting hymns in both Swahili and Greek. The moment felt like a true Pentecost—one Church, many languages, united in the Holy Spirit.
Several meaningful gifts were presented on behalf of the parish to mark the deep bond between Saint Mark Boca and the newly consecrated church:
- A vestment (Epigonation) bearing the icon of Saint Mark Boca was presented to Archbishop Makarios and Bishop Neofitos.
- An icon of Saint Mark Boca was given to the parish priest of the new cathedral for placement in the Holy Altar.
- A special gift from Helen Nicozisis was offered to the parish Presvytera, honoring the spiritual sisterhood and leadership shared across borders.
- Clergy vestments were also donated by Sophia Christakis’ father, and by Fr. Alexander, Fr. Mark, and Fr. Anastasios.
For the mission team, this was far more than a trip. It was a spiritual pilgrimage that deepened relationships and created lifelong bonds. It united our Saint Mark community not only with each other but with our Kenyan Orthodox brothers and sisters in a profound and permanent way.
In the fall, the parish will host a special evening to share this powerful experience with the entire community. The mission team will present photos, videos, and personal stories that capture the beauty, joy, and spiritual depth of this extraordinary journey.
This mission was a testament to what is possible when a parish lives the Gospel with intention. Saint Mark Church extended its heart across the globe—and in doing so, brought the love of Christ to life in unforgettable ways.
