The 15 Days of August: Prayer, Theology, and Renewal at Saint Mark

In the Orthodox Church, the first fifteen days of August form a sacred and spiritually rich period known as the Dormition Fast. This season is sometimes called the “Summer Lent,” as it is marked by fasting, prayer, and preparation for the Feast of the Dormition (Falling Asleep) of the Theotokos on August 15.

Historically, the Church has always turned to the Theotokos in times of trial, and during these days, we offer the beautiful Paraklesis Services, or Supplications, nearly every evening. These services are filled with hymns of comfort, hope, and healing, as we ask the Mother of God to intercede for us and for the world. For the faithful, these evenings become a spiritual anchor—a moment of quiet, reflection, and reconnection with God in the heart of summer.

But this season at Saint Mark offers more than prayer alone. It’s also a time to grow in our understanding of the faith. That’s why we are excited to present a four-part Adult Catechism Series on the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, a pivotal moment in Church history.

Held in 325 A.D., the Council of Nicaea clarified the Church’s teachings on the divinity of Christ and gave us the Nicene Creed, which we still proclaim each Divine Liturgy. This series, led by Fr. Mark, Fr. Anastasios, and James Bennett, will explore what happened at Nicaea, why it matters, and how it shapes our faith today.
