Holy Wednesday - The Service of Holy Unction

April 15, 2020 | Fr. Mark Leondis
On Holy Wednesday, the Church traditionally offers the Sacrament of Holy Unction. Holy Unction is a Sacrament in which the Holy Spirit comes down upon the oil and us, transforms all into something holy.
Holy Unction was used in the early Church to anoint the people who were ill and in need of healing. It comes from the Epistle to James (5:14-15) where we read, "Is any among you sick, let him call for the presbyters of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."
We receive the oil faithfully for the forgiveness of sins and complete healing of soul and body. While medicine and other healing properties can cure a portion of the body, the Sacraments can heal the entire person -- body and soul.
