Cultural Ministries

Our Mission

The Greek Orthodox faith is not a religion with any national allegiance. We practice a universal evangelical mission as Christ charged us with in Matt. 28 to "baptize all nations." However, one of the first nations to receive the good news of Christ from the original Apostles was the region presently known as Greece when Paul went with his companions to Philippi (Acts 16). Ever since, the Greek people have embraced the Christian faith so closely that it has become completely intertwined in their identity (and local culture). Saint Mark has faithful of all backgrounds, including a large portion with Greek heritage. We are proud of this heritage, and we offer plenty of cultural ministries to celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of the Greek Christian people.

"Syrtaki" Greek Dance

The "Syrtaki" dance Ministry is open to all youth members of our Parish. Dance groups and practice times are on Sundays during the Fall leading up to our annual Greek Festival in January. Anyone interested in being a part of the above Dance Teams must be a steward in good standing at Saint Mark, and all youth dancers must be enrolled (and regularly attending) our Sunday Church School classes.

The Order of AHEPA was founded in Atlanta, GA in 1922 to fight hatred, bigotry and discrimination and to help Greek immigrants assimilate into American society. Its mission is to promote the ancient Hellenic ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism. Our own AHEPA Chapter 487 excels in keeping to these founding principles, all while remaining integral members of our Saint Mark Church Family.

The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope (DOP) are to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family & Individual Excellence. The Daughters of Penelope encourages and promotes loyalty to the country in which they live; cultivates the ideals and traditions of Hellenism; promotes opportunities of education; and promotes the spirit of cooperation and works closely and in harmony with the whole AHEPA Family. Our own Cassandra Chapter is committed not only to these organizational efforts but our Saint Mark Family as well!

Greek Language School

Greek language instruction is a highly successful component of the Saint Mark educational and youth ministries. Young people attend class once or twice per week during the academic year. Classes are organized according to age and level of ability. In our attempt to provide a comprehensive education, the Saint Mark Greek Language School also exposes the students to Greek dance, culture and history, as well as the Orthodox faith and Traditions. Adults can register for Greek Language instruction as well. Adult classes are conducted in the evenings and are available as needed per semester.
