Lighting a Candle: A Holy Offering of Prayer

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” (John 1:5).

One of the most visible and beloved expressions of Orthodox Christian piety is the simple act of lighting a candle upon entering the church. At Saint Mark, this begins in the outer narthex—a space of transition where we step away from the noise and demands of the world. Here, we are greeted with warmth and love. It is a place to quiet the heart, slow down, and prepare to meet Christ.

From there, we pass into the inner narthex, where the atmosphere becomes more focused and reverent. This is where we encounter the icons and the candle stand—our first invitation to prayer. Lighting a candle is not merely symbolic; it is a physical act of devotion, a visible prayer offered to God. We may light a candle in memory of a departed loved one, for someone who is suffering, for thanksgiving, or simply out of love for Christ. Whatever the reason, the flame becomes a sign of faith and hope.

As the Psalmist proclaims, “Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice” (Psalm 140:2, OSB). Lighting a candle is a quiet yet profound offering. Whether a slender tapered beeswax candle or a 7-day votive that continues to burn throughout the week, each flame is a reminder that Christ is the Light of the world—and we are called to walk in His light.

Saint Symeon of Thessaloniki beautifully explains:
“The candle’s flame signifies the divine light of Christ; the pure wax, the purity of our soul; and the wick, our heart. When all three burn in harmony, our prayer becomes pleasing to God.”

When we place a donation and light a candle, we are not paying for a flame—we are giving of ourselves. The act is one of surrender, reverence, and intercession. It is a moment when our heart silently speaks, and our intention becomes visible. In this way, lighting a candle can be our very first prayer—often offered before a word is even spoken.

At Saint Mark, we encourage a spirit of intentional, heartfelt giving. Lighting a candle is one such opportunity—a personal act of faith that connects us to the life of the Church and the prayers of the faithful.

So as you come to worship, let the candle stand be your first stop. Let it be where your worship begins—silently, simply, and beautifully—in the Light of Christ.

“Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
