“From Hammer to Cloth” by Father Anastasios

If you were to read my biography, you might wonder why I seem to have such diverse interests. It’s not that I can’t make up my mind; rather, I was passionately exploring different paths to discover my true calling in life. The journey to the priesthood is a transformative experience, marked by dedication and humility.

For three consecutive summers, I traveled to our esteemed seminary, committing two weeks each year to rigorous training and enriching classes during the day. When at home, I traveled to New York on Sundays to be with my mentor for training. This path not only deepened my faith but also prepared me for the sacred responsibilities ahead.

Through this internal transformation, I began to realize that God had a unique journey in store for me. While our perspectives initially seemed misaligned, the clarity of His plan became increasingly apparent as I evolved. The warmth I felt at seminary each summer gave me the strength to keep moving forward.

As a self-employed contractor, I worried about how I could take two weeks off and still sustain my business. Yet, God made my schedule light during those weeks and brought the right people into my path. Barriers that once seemed impossible to overcome vanished in an instant. My fears and doubts dissolved, leaving me with peace. I finally grasped that when God has a purpose for you, His will paves the way. No obstacle can hinder your progress, and even in the face of challenges, you will move ahead.

This experience inspired me to further my education two years after my ordination as a Deacon. I joined the MDIV program, a rigorous four-year commitment with daily classes. Despite the challenges of commuting from Connecticut to Boston two or three times a week and juggling work, I found strength in my faith. God truly paved the way, making the journey possible and meaningful.

Matthew 4:19-20 resonates deeply with me: “And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” This passage marks the moment I boldly embraced a new beginning in Florida, leaving behind familiar surroundings, family ties, and my career.

That leap of faith led me to a beautiful parish, where I was embraced and felt deeply that this was where I was meant to be.
