Being a Man

In every generation, the world has tried to define what it means to “be a man.”

Strong. Successful. Independent. Tough. These are the words we hear most often. The world often tells men that showing emotion is weakness, that asking for help is failure, and that value comes from status or control.

But this image of manhood is incomplete. It can leave men feeling distant, burdened, or unsure of who they are meant to be. The truth is that Christ calls us to a deeper and more beautiful understanding of what it means to be a man.

The world measures men by what they achieve—their careers, possessions, and influence. It praises dominance and overlooks humility. It can make us believe that gentleness has no place in strength.

Yet, these measures fade quickly. They do not bring peace or purpose. Too often, they lead to loneliness and a quiet longing for something more lasting—something that speaks to the soul.

Christ shows us another way. He is strong, yet gentle. Courageous, yet humble. Powerful, yet full of compassion.

When the Lord knelt to wash His disciples’ feet, He gave us a lasting image of true manhood: strength expressed through service, leadership rooted in love. To be a man of God is to walk in that balance—to protect and provide, but also to forgive, to pray, and to love deeply.

It means being present for your family, faithful in your work, and compassionate toward those who struggle. It means allowing faith to form your heart more than ambition forms your image.

As St. Paisios the Athonite reminds us: “A true man is not the one who has physical strength, but the one who has spiritual courage—who struggles humbly, loves sincerely, and endures patiently.”

The world has plenty of men chasing success. What the Lord desires are men who seek His heart—men who live with kindness, faithfulness, and quiet strength.

Join us in the Saint MarksMEN as we strive to grow together in our vocation as men of God—loving, serving, and leading in the way of Christ.

1 Timothy 6:11 “But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”
